Veterinary specialist Valeria Ruoppolo explains the process that has been applied for the rescue and treatment of fauna.
Valeria Ruoppolo, director of Aiuká, an organization specialized in the rescue and treatment of fauna as a result of oil spills, explained in detail the processes carried out in the daily work with the fauna affected by the oil spill in Ventanilla.
“We came with the objective of monitoring the colonies, birds and other animals, to identify the number of affected animals, make a first reconnaissance and from there rescue those that needed treatment”, she commented.
First of all, Ruoppolo pointed out, is the identification of the affected animals. After that, a proper collection plan is deployed and they are taken to the collection points of the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) to finally bring them to the Rescue Center provided by Repsol, located in Parque de Las Leyendas Zoo.
“There, the animals are individually identified, checked, divided into groups and, thereafter, the animals are cared for in a process of stabilization of their clinical conditions until they pass certain criteria,” she added.
In this phase, the affected animals also go through a specialized bathing phase and begin a physical reconditioning process. Likewise, they are transferred to outdoor environments within the rescue center, continuing with all the nutritional, hygienic, and medical care, so that they can recover their best physical condition to return to their habitat.
