Lima, March 16, 2022. Repsol started yesterday the advance compensation payment to those affected by the spill originated by the vessel Mare Doricum last January 15. The fishermen received S/3,000 as a partial advance of the economic compensation to mitigate the impact they have experienced in their work activities, reducing their income.
This compensation advance is in addition to the first emergency aid granted by Repsol as part of its commitment to those affected. In this context, on March 4, Repsol signed an agreement with the Government of Peru to benefit fishermen and traders grouped in a single agreed census of 5,593 people. According to the agreement, those identified as affected by the spill, determined by the INDECI census and agreed with the company, will receive a partial advance of the economic compensation to mitigate the impact they have seen on their labor income.
To date, the company has already signed compensation agreements with 11 fishermen´s associations. Repsol continues to work so that the members of these associations, and the rest of those affected who complete the single census prepared by INDECI and agreed upon by the company, receive their corresponding S/3,000 compensation advance.
Long-term commitment
Repsol reiterates its long-term commitment to all affected communities. The company will maintain its support until the beaches, and the sea are once again suitable for developing various productive activities. It will also coordinate with fishermen and traders to develop medium and long-term support plans.
Since January, Repsol has provided basic necessities support to people grouped in 82 fishermen and traders’ collectives in Chancay, Ancón, Santa Rosa, and Ventanilla. More than 7,000 vouchers and cards of S/500 have been delivered to date. The company will also coordinate with the collectives mentioned above to develop medium and long-term support plans, focusing on productive projects and diversification workshops for the affected economic sectors.
Repsol will remain in continuous dialogue with the authorities and communities as long as this situation continues following the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which the company integrated into its internal policies in 2013.
