● The agreement will benefit fishermen and traders with a partial advance of the economic compensation to mitigate the effects of the Mare Doricum spill.
Lima, March 04, 2022. Repsol and the Government of Peru have signed an agreement that will benefit fishermen and traders affected by the oil spill originated by an uncontrolled movement of the Mare Doricum tanker on January 15. This agreement is in addition to those that Repsol has previously signed with fishermens associations in Ancon and Chancay.
The president of the Council of Ministers, Anibal Torres, and the chairman of Repsol Peru, Jaime Fernández-Cuesta, signed the agreement today, thus demonstrating Repsol commitment to Peruvian society. Under this agreement, the government will provide the company with a census, that includes more than 5,000 people, so that Repsol can expand the base of affected people that it has been able to identify and register so far. With this data, the company will be able to extend the support it to date has offered to various groups following the Mare Doricum spill.
Thanks to this agreement, the affected fishermen and traders will receive a partial advance of the economic compensation to mitigate the impact they have experienced in their work activities, reducing their income.
In no less than 30 days, the situation will be re-evaluated in order to determine the full amount of compensation, taking into account when the affected parties will be able to return to work.
Long-term commitment
Repsol reiterates its commitment to remedy the damages that the spill has caused to the communities in the affected area. The company will maintain the support it is offering until the beaches and the sea are once again suitable for the development of the various productive activities. It is also coordinating with fishermen and traders to develop medium and long-term support plans.
The company has recently signed compensation agreements, that will benefit more than 1,550 fishermen, with the Asociación de Pescadores Artesanales de Ancón, the Confederación de Pescadores Artesanales de la Rivera de Chancay, and the Asociación de Pescadores y Armadores Artesanales José Olaya Balandra del Puerto (Chancay).
In addition, Repsol has been providing basic necessities to a total of 4,102 people, grouped in 69 fishermen and merchants collectives in Chancay, Ancón, Santa Rosa and Ventanilla. To date, 6,599 vouchers of S/ 500 have been delivered. The modalities of support, as well as the periodicity of deliveries, have been previously agreed with these communities.
The company will remain in continuous dialogue with the authorities and the communities as long as this situation continues.
